What is NeTropica ? |
The Network for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases in Central America (NeTropica) is devoted to promote collaborative biomedical research among various scientific groups working in Central America.
Through out the years its main partners have been the laboratories located in the Central American Universities and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. However, in the last years other international laboratories and Latin American networks have been incorporated as partners. NeTropica gives complementary grant funds to Central American and Swedish laboratories participating in joint research activities, supports the organization of scientific meetings and courses, promotes the exchange of scientist and distributes relevant information for fund raising and collaborative research among the network participants.
The future of NeTropica is linked to the success of the participating research units and to fund raising activities performed by the investigators and NeTropica administrative coordination. |

The NeTropica Experience |
In an effort to increase the caliber of university scholars, some Central American Universities along with non-profit Institutions, have initiated joint academic and scientific ventures. These ventures, often in collaboration with scientists from developed countries and the support of international agencies, involve a wide range of disciplines, especially in the fields of Biology, Agronomy, and Biomedicine.
Graduate programs supported by regional universities as well as by Swedish and other International Agencies from the developed countries have been very valuable in the expansion and progress of a trained body of biomedical scientists in Central America. What the region now requires is a concerted effort to promote the formation and growth of a competitive "critical mass" of investigators capable of independent fund raising and research. It is within this context that the Network for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases in Central America had its Genesis.
NeTropica encourages and supports the formation of teams of three to four groups to work on joint projects in areas of priority health and medicine in Central America. It promotes links with other Networks and it seeks contacts for project developments in all Latin American countries.
This group of laboratories will perform research, participate in graduate training programs, attend planning and review meetings, all within the framework of a proposal submitted to an international funding agency. Ongoing collaboration with research groups from developed countries who can provide invaluable assistance in the selection and quality control of the research projects is an important element of the network. It will be carried out within the framework and principles established in the Guidelines for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries, of the Swiss Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries (KEPE).
In conclusion, NeTropica is committed to promoting better research within the region and improving the ability of scientists to seek funding independent of established sources. Such regional projects, moreover, will be an attractive alternative to Central American scientists who would otherwise seek work abroad.
